Hydroseeding
Why should you hydroseed?
Hydroseeding is a fast, cost effective way to have a new lawn that will turn your neighbors green with envy.
Hydroseeding is a fraction of the price of sod and much more effective than conventional dry-seeding.
Although it looks like you have an immediate lawn by laying sod there are many factors to consider:
- You must remember that the sod farmer has given his product a premium environment, in order to have a good looking product and turn the fields over as quickly as possible. When sod is removed from this premium environment and placed on lifeless soil, it will founder for about five years before adapting and start to grow properly. Seed on the other hand, does not know anything but what is germinates in, and does its best with what it has.
- Sod is grass with its roots clipped off. It takes more watering to prevent dyeing off, the more moisture the more chemicals that are needed due to fungal problems. Hydroseeding has no roots because it is just seed, with using seed your choice of turf grass is a lot greater than with sod. Because the seed grows its roots on site, the roots will usually grow deeper and result in more drought resistant turf.
- It is not unusual for a sod planted lawn to thin itself out over time unless strict fertilizing schedules are adhered to. A hydroseeded lawn will come in according to the amount of available moisture and plant food that is available to the grass. This results in a less stressed plant and makes hydroseeded lawns more forgiving to improper care.
There are also advantages of choosing hydroseeding over conventional dry-seeding:
- Hydroseeded lawns will come up faster. The seed is packed with all the nutrients needed for fastest germination.
- Hydroseeding has an attractive green appearance that looks far better than dry-seeded lawns covered with straw mulch.
- Unlike straw that is often used as a protective cover for a newly seeded area, Hydroseeding mulch contains NO WEED SEED. Straw is loaded with weed seed.
- Hydroseeding allows the custom tailoring of the proper seed for your job. It is not uncommon to use two or even three seeds custom spraying the right seed for different areas on the lawn or job. We can use one seed for shady areas, one for high traffic areas, one to make the front lawn a showpiece.
- Hydro Seeding mulch adds to the humus content of a lawn as it decomposes. The bacterial action of straw will leach nitrogen from the soil as it decomposes.
How is it done?
First, your soil will be tested to ensure a premium growing environment. After the area has been prepped your new lawn will be sprayed on. The protective mulch covering has an attractive green appearance. A special blend of seeds will be used that will be chosen for the conditions and requirements you have. The factors that may go into the choice may be the amount of sun, shade, the terrain, the type of soil and if you have children or pets.
Your lawn will be hydroseeded with a tested, high quality, certified turf mix. Germination time will depend on the weather, the time of year, the amount of water, the area you live in and other factors. Usually grass will be visible in 5-7 days, a few days slower in cold weather or the hottest part of summer.
